Mark Twain was named of “the Mirror of America” Brief Introduction Twain was very popular, and his keen wit and incisive satire earned praise from critics and peers. Upon his death he was lauded as the “ greatest American humorist of his age”, William Faulkner called Twain the father of American literature. Family Background Mark Twain ,pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri,of a Virginian family. He had seven brothers and sisters.He was the sixth of his family.His father was a local lawyer. Childhood Experience When he was four years old,his family moved to Hannibal in Missouri. At four years old his mother died,3 years later his brother Benjamin died, his another brother Pleasant died before he was born.Except these ,he had a younger brother Henry. At 12 years old,his father died. Childhood Experience In March ,1848,he became a printers apprentice ; In 1851,he became a typesetter and began to contribute,also he started to write the draft for his brother’s magazine--Hannibal Journal; At 18 years old,he left Hannibal,went to other cities,such as New York, Philadelphia, Saint Louis. Childhood Experience He went back to Mississippi when he was 22 years old . He worked as a licensed Mississippi river-boat pilot whose wage ranked the third in America at that time,about 250 dollars a month. “Mark Twain”was born On February 3, 1863, Mark Twain was born when Clemens signed a humorous travel account with that pseudonym. Childhood Experience The Civil War put an end to the steamboat traffic and Clemens moved to Virginia City, where he edited the Territor
