From CA to CA(Contrastive Analysis to Conversation Analysis) Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis(CAH) based on a behavioristic theory of language first application of linguistic theory to the teaching of languages where two languages are similar, positive transfer will occur where they are different, negative transfer, or interference, will result the audio-lingual method is based on the contrastive analysis hypothesis Two Versions of the CAH The strong one (a priori) claimed that predictions of trouble spots could be made based upon a comparison of two languages. This starts with a crosslinguistic analysis and then attempts to predict trouble spots. The weak one (a posteriori) claimed that cross-linguistic comparison could help to explain learner errors. This starts with learner errors and attempts to account for them with cross-grammatical comparisons. CAH Refuted Since CA was tied so closely to behaviorism, Chomskys refutation of the behaviorist view of language learning/acquisition was also in effect a refutation of the CAH Evidence from research also failed to support the CAH Error Analysis First of mentalist-based approaches Language acquisition as rule formation (early 60s). likens the process of L2 acquisition to that of L1 in that learners/acquirers are said to develop rules of grammar Support for this is found in that L2 learners commit developmental errors similar to those of children learning L1.
