Unit 6 The tyger 《英国文学》课程·经典文学阅读与写作 2009级6班 X X X Introduction to William Blake William Blake (November 28, 1757 – August 12, 1827) was an English poet, painter and printmaker, or Author Printer, as he signed many of his books. Born in London. He never went to school, but he learned to read and write at home, with his mother’s help. At 10, he was sent to drawing school. Then he was sent on apprenticeship with an engraver. At his twentieth, he ended his apprenticeship and he began graving on his own account. In 1782, Blake was married to Catherine Boucher, the daughter of a market gardener. During the years 1788-1793 Blake mixed a good deal with the political radicals and the social reformers of the time. As early as 1789, Blake wrote “French Revolution” and Prophetic Book”. In 1790, “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell”. In 1793,Blake issued a “Prospectus, To the Public”. In 1794, “The Songs of Innocence” was published again, together with “The Songs of Experience” . In 1804, Blake started to etch both “Milton” and “Jerusalem”. Summary of The Tyger The Tyger is a poem by the English poet William Black. It was published as part of his collection Songs of Experience in 1794. It is one of Blakes best known and most analyzed poems. The Cambridge Companion to William Blake (2003) calls it the most anthologized poem in English. Most modern anthologies have kept Blakes choice of the archaic spelling tyger. It was a common spelling of the word at the time but was already slightly archaic“ when he wrote the poem; he spelled it as tiger elsewhere, and many of his poetic effects depended on subtle differences of punctuation and of spelling.“ Thus, his choice of tyger has usually been interpreted as being for effect, perhaps to render an exotic or alien quality of the beast, or because its not really about a tiger at all, but a metaphor. The Tyger is the sister poem to “The Lamb “Songs of Innocence”, a reflection of similar ideas
