Chaucer (1340-1400) The poet died on the 25th of October 1400, and was buried in Westminster Abbey, founding the “Poets’ Corner.” Chaucer’s Literary Career During his life Chaucer was first much in France, then not a little in Italy. And finally settled down in England. His literary career can be divided into three periods corresponding with his life. 1). “The Romaunt of the Rose adapted from the French . 2). “Troilus and Criseyde adapted from the Italian. 3). “The Canterbury Tales purely English . “Troilus and Criseyde” Troilus and Criseyde, taken from a poem by Boccaccio, is Chaucer’s longest complete poem which is about 8000 lines Chaucers poem marks a new step in the authors progress to maturity distinguished for its profound delineation of character and truthful description of human relations. IV.“ The Canterbury Tales” (1387-1400) This is Chaucers masterpiece and one of the monumental works in English literature. The Pilgrims at Table 1. Outline of the Story This gigantic plan means that there should be an immense collection of 124 stories. Actually only 24 were written. All these tales but two are written in verse. 2. The Prologue The Prologue provides a framework for the tales, it is a splendid masterpiece of realistic portrayal, it was first invented in the history of English literature. It figures out a group of vivid sketches of medieval society except the royalty and the poorest peasant. Every one was drawn with the accuracy. The Prologue supplies a miniature of the English society of Chaucer’s time. Therefore, Chaucer was praised as the founder of English realism.” 3.
