Teaching procedure: 1. writing style--- Exposition Exposition means expounding or explaining. An expository paper explains or explores sth, such as the process of making a machine, the causes of a natural or social phenomenon, the planning of a project, or the solution of a problem. When we writing a descriptive essay, we describe the appearance of an object; but when we writing an expository essay, we explain how it is made, how it is used, and how it may change. When we narrate a historical event, we tell what happened, when and where it happened, and who took part in it. In an expository paper, we discuss its cause and effect, its nature, and its significance in history. The purpose or intension of the writer of exposition is to inform or explain. Thus he must organize and develop his thought objectively and present it with honesty and completeness so that the reader will have confidence in what he is saying. The most important quality of exposition is clarity: limit his subject, for it is impossible to explain many things clearly in a short essay; prepare enough material(details or examples) to help his explanation; present his facts and views in proper order, in the order of time or of logical sequence depending on the nature of the subject; pay attention to the accuracy and clarity of words and sentences, avoid ambiguous expressions; make his exposition, if possible, interesting or moving. The writer generally makes a statement of the central thought or of his purpose quite early. This statement is sometimes called the “thesis” and may even be the title of the piece. Sometimes writer may first present and develop his facts and make his general statement as a conclusion at the end. The thesis may be supported and developed in a variety of ways.
