I. cover letter What is a cover letter? a sales letter: sells the job applicant to the prospective employer and gives the potential employer a first impression. Information to present in a cover letter -applicant’s qualifications (strengths, skills, talents), -applicant’s accomplishments -applicant’s possible contribution to the prospective employer, etc. Two styles of cover letters (p. 32-33) Different types of cover letters Applying “on spec”: not advertised - abilities, qualifications and experience which are useful to the prospective employer - state if you are willing to do various jobs - state jobs that you can handle Applying in response to ads.: provide relevant qualifications Applying based on reference: mention the referral’s name. Applying electronically: state the position in the subject line Career / Professional Objective a subjective statement about what you can do for your prospective employers and what benefits they will have if they employ you a single phrase Simple: job title Effective: Job title + two or three top qualifications for the job + the benefits your future employer will have by hiring you. E.g. Personnel Management where my five years of management experience, my proven record in recruiting and training new employees, and my ability to motivate others will result in improved employee performance. New graduates: list the educational information before work experience Alumni: list the work experience first Include the degree, major, institution attended, location of institution, date of graduation, related coursework, etc. Chronological vs. Functional format chronological format: -- work experience organized chronologically and listed according to the job title and employer --stress the time period a job was held, the past employers and the job titles √changing jobs within your industry √ seeking upward mobility and more responsibility in a similar career path √ currently employed with a steady work
