I have only included the areas that pertain to analysis and design. The inception phase establishes the feasibility of a new product to the point that resources are committed to the project and a project plan is put in place. * * Here the problem domain means the system to be built. Elaboration is where most of the analysis activity is performed. The purpose of analysis is to understand the problem and the problem must be well understood before moving on to the construction phase. Elaboration cannot be considered complete until a sound architectural foundation has been established in the form of an integrated, executable architectural product and that architecture has been sufficiently exercised to prove its appropriateness to the problem at hand. Note that at the beginning of this phase, several exploratory, throwaway prototypes may be generated to try out different architectural approaches or to mitigate specific risks. However, elaboration cannot be concluded until the architecture has been built, tested, integrated, and baselined.
