What is Your Science Teaching Metaphor? Science Methods – Middle and Secondary What Metaphor Fits? You are the sun and students are plants You are the grocer and students are customers You are a gardener and students are flowers You are the director and students are actors You are the coach and students are players You are on the pit crew and students are cars You are the guide and students are explorers You are the captain and students are soldiers You are a scientist and students are colleagues Filling Station Guide Director Gardener Draw your metaphor – here are examples: What does your metaphor communicate about the role of the teacher? Student? What does your metaphor communicate about the nature of the learning process? * * Which of these metaphor captures your approach to teaching science? Do your beliefs about teaching align with the choices you are making. What is your model of teaching and learning? – Do students come to you with pre-conceived ideas about the way the world works? How much do these ideas influence student thinking? If students memorize lessons, then how well are these lessons learned? Does the learning last? Do their preconceived ideas return? How can learning have a lasting impact? Learners begin with a structure. Part of our job is to help students re-build their beginning structures. We cannot begin the building process until we know their ideas. Learning and teaching work best when students are engaged in building knowledge. If the structure needs to change, then students must be the ones who do the re-structuring. If the structure needs to be enlarged, again, students are the ones who must be involved in the construction. Teachers are involved in the construction process by eliciting students’ existing ideas, challenging those ideas, offering replacement ideas that are plausible, intelligible,
