The Canterbury Tales British Literature - Senior English Mrs. Sandra S. Collier Huntsville, AL About Geoffrey Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet, was born in 1342, although historians are uncertain about his exact birth date and early life. His parents, John and Agnes, were well-to-do and possessed several buildings in the vintage quarter in London. Not much is known about his formal education, but Chaucer had some education in Latin and Greek. Once out of school he was employed as a page in the household of the Countess of Ulster. Chaucer rose in royal employment and became a knight of the shire for Kent. As a member of the king’s household, Chaucer was sent on diplomatic errands throughout Europe. From these activities and travels, he gained the knowledge of society and government that made it possible to compose The Canterbury Tales which he wrote between 1387-1400. He died in October 1400 and was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. He was the first of those who are gathered in what we now know as the Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. Pilgrims on a Journey It is a collection of stories within a frame story and was written in Middle English (showing the highly inflected Germanic form of Old English). The narrator tells of a group of thirty people who gather at the Tabard Inn and travel together to Canterbury (about 56 miles from London). The pilgrims come from all layers of society (a slice of medieval life), excluding the nobility and peasants. They are defined by the narrator and in terms of what they wear, eat, say, do, how they look, their rank in society and/or their job, and the type of stories they tell. Telling stories provides entertainment while on their pilgrimage, although there is a contest among them for the best story. It will be judged by the Host of the Tabard Inn who decides to join them on their journey. Trusting in the information given in his prologue, Chaucer intended each pilgrim to tell four tales each (120 stories
