Traders harvest the plants, extract the midrib of the leaves, transport the plants and sell them in the local markets. The leaf fibres have to be soaked then plaited to give strength and form This big pile of plaited hogla is waiting to be turned into baskets, stools and mats at one of Created partner, Heed Handicrafts’ producers workshop. The workshop belongs to Julhas and is situated in Gacha near Dhaka. A group of Created Sellers visited this workshop in 2009 The Lao Song people live in the southern plains of Thailand. It’s a good area for growing rice, but in the past rice harvests have failed and the villagers have been badly affected. Wantana can remember as a girl being very hungry when the harvests failed. This uncertainty was the catalyst for an American missionary to set up a handicraft programme among the women to supplement the farming income. Wantana’s mother was one of the first workers, and because Wantana was a bright girl the missionary sponsored her through secondary school. Now, many years after the missionary has retired back to the USA Wantana runs the group. The women who are being helped in these villages are mainly single mothers or women from families where the income is low and not enough for the family’s needs. Many of the women come to church with their children and all of them feel able to talk about their problems with Wantana. This church where some of the villagers worship was built with the tithes donated by the producers from the sales of their handicrafts. Julhas handicraft workshops provides work for 35 artisans between 2 workshops. 20% of it’s production is sold through HEED Handicrafts Overseas Visitors always get a warm welcome especially from curious children!
