Enjoying Drama Referring to British American Drama 1. What is drama? 2. Types of Drama 3. Elements of Drama Her Major Works Sense and Sensibility (1811 first novel ) tells a story about two sisters and their love affairs;《理智与情感》 Pride and Prejudice (1813 most popular) deals with the five Bennet sisters and their search for suitable husbands; 《傲慢与偏见》 Her Major Works Emma (1815) gives the thought over self-deceptive vanity;《爱玛》 Persuasion (1818) contrasts the true love with the prudential calculations. 《劝导》 Jane Austen(1775-1817) The first chapter consists almost entirely of dialogue, a typical instance of Austen’s technique of using the manner in which characters express themselves to reveal their traits (personalities) and attitudes. There is little description of the characters in the novel, so the reader’s perception of them is shaped largely by their conversation. Jane Austen(1775-1817) (TB,P.39, top) Notice the dialogue between the husband and the wife. It’s lively and dramatic, perfectly revealing the characters’ personality. (TB,P.40, end) This is an amusing description of the relation between the old couple, and also a keen observation and distinct illustration of Mrs. Bennet’s life and character. D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) One of the greatest English novelists of the 20th century. Also a painter, a proficient poet. His major works: The White Peacock (白孔雀,1911) Sons and Lovers (儿子与情人,1913) The Rainbow (彩虹,1915) Women in Love (恋爱中的女人,1921) Lady Chatterley’s Lover (查泰来夫人的情人,1928) * Enjoying Essays The essay, a term originally taken from French word ”essai” (meaning ”attempt”), is a composition, usually in prose, which may be of only a few hundred words or of book length and which discusses, formally or informally, a topic or a variety of topics.
