Since the mid-1980s’ “Washington Consensus” on deregulation, global communication is increasingly characterized by competition between opposing forces: capital and labor, the state and the market, global consumer identity and national citizenship. Telecommunication media are enabling the creation of global call centers, factories malls while newspapers continue to be national and patriotic.
This course will examine the ownership of major media, the nature of advertising, the business process outsourcing that the Internet enables, news, and the entertainment content that media provide. This course presents an understanding of global-national-local tussles, embedded in history, economics, politics and culture.
Course Format: My conception of education is drawing out insights from you in response to a menu of stimulating readings, lectures and videos. Education consists of two equally important parts: teaching (my responsibility), and learning (your responsibility): you will get out of the course only as much as you put in to it. A rule of thumb is to plan twice as much out-of-class preparation and reading time (6 hours a week for this course) as your 3 hours in class. Recommended reading strategies are listed here, but as upper class persons, I suspect you are familiar with them.
You are required to do all the readings before class in preparation for discussion. Bring your notes and assigned readings to class. Never give your instructors the only copy of anything.
