UCI Writing Project presents… Summer Institute for Teachers On the Teaching of Composition and Literature Project Faculty: Director: Carol Booth Olson Co-Director: Catherine D’Aoust class: Education X332.7 Location: Education Building, UCI Campus DATES: June 30 – July 25, 2014; Monday-Friday; 9:00a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Statement of Purpose The Summer Institute is designed to help teachers (elementary through university) develop techniques for teaching listening, speaking, reading, writing, and critical thinking to their students, enhance their own abilities as writers, and impart what they have learned to other teachers in in-service workshops. Our aim is that the Fellows will come away from the Institute with a renewed sense of excitement about and commitment to the teaching of composition and literature and with a firmer grasp of the processes of reading, thinking and writing. Selection of Fellows and Stipend Interested teachers should apply for admission to the program before April 25, 2014. Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of the candidate’s statement of interest in the program, commitment to improving the reading, thinking and writing skills of students, letters of reference, personal interview, and potential as an in-service workshop leader. Those selected to participate in the Summer Institute will receive a stipend of $750 (paid in two increments.) Ten-quarter units of academic credit are available for a minimal fee.  Format Presentation by Fellows — Each Fellow will deliver an informal presentation to the group within the area of his/her expertise. Presenters will be encouraged to share specific lesson plans and to provide handouts and suggested reading lists. Presenters may ask the group to participate in writing exercises and other assignments. These presentations are part of a group-teach approach to the Institute and are designed to facilitate information and technique sharing and problem solving among
