Jobin, M.N. Abhilash, H. Murthy? Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, 600036, India MARK ARTICLE INFO Keywords: Contact mechanics Functionally graded materials Friction Singular integral equation ABSTRACT Numerical analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) coated surface in two-dimensional frictional contact with arbitrary shaped rigid stamp is presented. Loads are applied such that the stamp is fully sliding. Pressure distribution at the interface for arbitrary pro?le is expressed as a modi?ed cosine series. Due to its ability to analyze arbitrary shaped contacts, it can be a powerful design tool for evaluating contact response due to di?erent shapes and sizes of indenter. A multi-layer model of FGM coating with piecewise constant approximation for Youngs modulus variation is used. Simpli?cations have been suggested in the formulation to aid numerical evaluation of the resulting integrals. The method is demonstrated for symmetric and unsymmetric pro?les and compared with results from literature. 1. Introduction Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are those with a gradation of material properties along a direction to suit a given function. There has been an increased interest in the development of FGMs suitable for designing surfaces that may produce less contact stresses in some cases and surfaces that are wear resistant in other [1]. Conventionally, these desirable properties were achieved by coating the surface. A softer coating will produce lesser contact stresses, whereas a harder coating will make the surface wear resistant [2]. However, these coatings were less durable because of the abrupt change in properties across the interface between the substrate material and
