ABSTRACT
Contact induced failure of a sodium cooled fast reactor fuel rod is considered in this paper. An acceleration test is conducted with the specimens of actual dimensions and material to predict the maintainability of the structural and functional integrity until the end of the fuel life. Finite element analyses are carried out to obtain the vibration and contact characteristics of the relevant components. The test time is determined as 16.5 h by consulting the reliability engineering. Neither a wear nor a fatigue crack is found on any contact surface of the ?ve specimens tested. This is interpreted as the end cap of the fuel rod would guarantee the B0.004 life with 99% reliability.
1. Introduction
Contact between a hole and cylinder is a typical geometry of conformal contact, which is often found in the connecting parts of a mechanical structure. A typical example is a circular pin joint. However, it has not been widely studied in comparison with a nonconformal contact problem. The contact traction ?eld of a conformal contact was ?rst derived almost half a century ago by Persson [1]. However, since then, a few works have been devoted to this problem. Some results of Perssons work [1] were reviewed by Johnson [2]. A crack emanating from the conformal contact surface was analyzed using the dislocation density function method [3].
