Lewis invited his friend lieutenant William Clark to share the leadership. The party consisted of 45 people. The expedition started near the city of St.Louis in the winter of 1803, passed through portions of Missouri, Mississippi, South Dakota, North Dakota, reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. The party got back to St.Louis on Sept. 23, 1806. They had traveled about 6,000 miles, and the whole journey cost them two years, four months, and nine days. Lewis and Clark brought back much information about geography, plants and animals of western United States. The expedition helped to have a better understanding of Native Americans and open the way for westward expansion. The author—Landon Y.
