Leading Men ——Landon Y.Jones Unit 4 Guo Yongliang Liu Xiang Brief Introduction For the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the author tells a story about the two men with regard to their personality, their cooperation and their influence on American history. Background Louisiana Purchase Part of American expansion $15 million 1803 from France The largest single territorial addition ever made to the United States(2,100,000 km2?) from the Gulf of Mexico northward to the Canadian border and from the Mississippi River westward to the Rocky Mountains American Expansion Lewis and Clark Expedition Upon the U.S. purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson chose his young secretary, Meriwether Lewis ,to head the expedition to explore and map the newly acquired territory, find a practical route across the Western half of the continent, and establish an American presence in this territory before Britain and other European powers tried to claim it. Lewis invited his friend lieutenant William Clark to share the leadership. The party consisted of 45 people. The expedition started near the city of St.Louis in the winter of 1803, passed through portions of Missouri, Mississippi, South Dakota, North Dakota, reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. The party got back to St.Louis on Sept. 23, 1806. They had traveled about 6,000 miles, and the whole journey cost them two years, four months, and nine days. Lewis and Clark brought back much information about geography, plants and animals of western United States. The expedition helped to have a better understanding of Native Americans and open the way for westward expansion. The author—Landon Y. Jones Jones, who used to be a writer at Time and editor of Money and People magazines, serves on the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial(二百周年纪念).
