Lesson objectives:
1.Students will be able to ask ones nationality and to give and understand related responses.
2.Expressions and structures: (Are you … ? / Are you from… ?/ Where are you from? / What nationality are you? /Im …. /Im from …. /Im of … nation-ality. / My nationality is ….)
3.Review names of people and languages of some countries: ( Scottish/Scots/Welsh/ Irish/French/American/Japanese/German/English/Canadian) and the word nation-ality.
Teaching aids: a map of the world, a map of Britain, a recorder, etc.
Teaching procedure:
A.Preparation
1.Revision
Communicate with the students to review something about Britain. For example, ask the students the full name of Britain, its geographic situation, its people, capital and language. Then show a map of the world and point to the country of America to review the words nation, national and nationality. For example, ask the students questions like the following: Which nation is it? (It is America. ) What is its national flag? (It is a flag with stars and stripes. ) What nationality is Abraham Lincoln? (He is an American. ) After that, point to another country and ask the students to talk about it using the three similar words.
2.Presentation
Ask the students a question to present the new lesson: David is from Britain. But he is not English. Who can tell me the reason? The students can think about the answers. Then they can discuss with each other. The students may offer answers like: Maybe he is Scottish, or he is from Wales or Northern Ireland, because every one of them is part of Britain. Show a map of Britain and explain the reason to the students: Britain is made up of four parts: Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. And wed better call the people from Scotland ?British? or ?Scottish?, but not ?English?.
