O P T I O N A L P R A C T I C A L T R A I N I N G ( O P T ) Optional Practical Training (OPT) is an opportunity to gain work experience to complement your academic program. F-1 Students are entitled to one year of OPT for each higher degree. To obtain OPT, you must have completed one academic year in full-time status and currently hold F-1 status. To obtain post-completion OPT, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must have received your application NO LATER THAN 60 days FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF THE DEGREE AND NO SOONER THAN 90 days PRIOR TO THE DATE OF COMPLETION OF THE DEGREE. To obtain the 17 month STEM extension USCIS must receive your application no later than the date your current EAD card expires, but preferably 120 days prior to the date the EAD card expires. Students may not accrue an aggregate of more than 90 days of unemployment during any post-completion OPT carried out under the initial post-completion OPT authorization. Students on 12-month OPT can remain in the U.S. unemployed for an aggregate of 90 days. Students granted a 17-month OPT extension may not accrue an aggregate of more than 120 days of unemployment during the total 29-month OPT period. If you do not find employment or cease employment for any reason before the authorized OPT period expires, the unused time may not be credited for later use. A Letter of Certification from the department chair and/or academic advisor is required. Students in the College of Engineering must submit a letter from their department chair.
