Thank you! History of the English Language 2012-5-10 The history of English Before the emerging of old English When Julius Caesar, invaded Britain in BC 54-5, the Celtic tribes lived in the British Isles. Their Celtic languages still survive as Gaelic in Scotland Ireland, Welsh, in Wales, and Manx in the Isle of Man. The Romans brought Latin to Britain, which was part of the Roman Empire for over 400 years. But early English did not develop mainly from Latin. So it is unlike French, Spanish and Italian, which did come directly from Latin. Old English (450-1100 AD) 5th century AD At that time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language Three Germanic tribes(日耳曼部落): the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes(朱特人) invaded Britain Most of the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Old English (450-1100 AD) The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. The Angles ‘ language was called Englisc - from which the words England and English are derived. The Angles were one of the main Germanic groups that settled in Britain in the post-Roman period, founding several of the kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England, and their name is the root of the name England. Ancient Germanic people Old English (450-1100 AD) Part of Beowulf, a poem written in Old English. /v_playlist/f4346581o1p2.html Old English (450-1100 AD) Late in the sixth century The introduction of Christianity encouraged the addition of over 400 Latin loan words, such as priest, paper, and school, and fewer Greek loan words In the tenth and eleventh centuries, Old English was strongly influenced by the North Germanic language Old Norse, spoken by the Norsemen who invaded and settled mainly in the North East of England The meaning of Norseman was “people from the North” and was applied primarily to Nordic people(北欧人) originating from southern and central Scandinavia.
