Away from the World - a story of a 6-year old boy with AIDS Ah-Long is a 6 year old orphan who lost both of his parents to AIDS. Diagnosed with HIV as well, Ah-Long has been living in a mountain village on his own. His father passed away years ago, relatives are afraid to touch him, and the school will not allow him to enroll. This is his story. Without parents, Ah-Long is living alone in a rundown hut with a leaking roof and no windows. Occasionally, good-hearted villagers come by to donate bedding and food. While other children have new toys and electronics, Ah-Longs most treasured possession is an old toy tricycle. Other children are not allowed to play with Ah-Long. Because he is diagnosed with HIV, he is not allowed to attend school. His only playmate is a dog. His best friend is Lao Hei (Old Black). She is a 7 year old native breed. Most of the day, he holds her in his arm watching the time ticks away. Every once in a while, Ah-Longs 89 year old grandmother will visit. The government provides the boy with $15 a month as living assistance Ah-Longs grandmother made him a small vegetable garden. He has learned to harvest the cabbages and cook with rice At 6 years old, Ah-Long must hike on his own up the hills in order to collect firewood. Ah-Long cooks his own meals His dinner consists of only water, rice, and cabbage; there is no seasoning. The meal is not just for himself, it will be shared wth Lao Hei, his best and only friend. For Ah-Long, a warm bath is a pot of hot water on an open field. He must care for himself alone. A lonely day is followed by a lonely night. Without anyone to read for him at bedtime, Ah-Long has learned to pass the time alone. This is a real story of a Chinese boy in the Guangxi province. The 6 year old Ah-Long is barricaded by the rejection of society because of the deadly HIV virus. He is forced to take on tasks of an adult, learning to wash, cook, farm, and survive by himself.
