Classified by notion: function (or structural) words and content (or full) words * 08词汇学week 2 Classification of English vocabulary Nine Characteristics Mainly of Anglo-Saxon origin Mostly monosyllabic Forming the basic stock of the E vocabulary, including auxiliary v, num, pro, pre, conj, etc. High frequency in daily use: 70 to 90% Mostly essential to daily life, e.g. sun, moon, rain, night, morning, here, there, horse, dog, tree, flower, head, hand, foot, big, small, red, white, live, eat, work, etc By origin -- native words -- nine characteristics * 08词汇学week 2 Classification of English vocabulary Nine Characteristics National character: known to all native speakers, naturalized in in usage, conforming to native E accent and spelling Stability: small number dropped off or entering the basic stock, e.g. arrow, bow (dropped off); bus, car, computer (entering) Strong word forming power, e.g. handful, handy, handbag, handball, handwriting Active in collocation, e.g. at first hand; hand in hand (Nearly 90 set phrases with ‘hand’ in them are found in a dictionary.)
