Style, text and frequency 1.A brief review of the definition of style: Style refers to the way in which language is used in a given context,by a given person,for a given purpose. Several popular definitions: 1.Style may refer to some or all of the language habits(i.e. speech and writing habits) of one person. For example, Shakespeares style, Hermingways style 2. Style may also refer to some or all of the language habits shared by a group of people at one time, or a period of time. For example,the style of Augustan poets, styles of public-speaking, the style of legal documents The definition of a text A text refers to any passage,spoken or written,of whatever length,that forms a unified whole.A text is a semantic unit,a unit not only of form,but also of meaning. Text As a countable noun, its commonly used in linguistics and stylistics to refer to a sequential collection of sentences or utterances which form a unity by reason of their linguistic cohesion and semantic coherence:e.g. a scientific article,a recipe,a poem,a public lecture,etc. The connection among parts of a text is achieved by various cohesive devices, and by semantic and pragmatic implication.Texts are recognized as appropriately coherent in actual use.A full understanding of a text is often impossible without reference to the context in which it occurs. Frequency Consistency and tendency are most naturally reduced to frequency, and so,it appears, the stylistician becomes a statistician.Generally, we recognize a style only when certain choices of language features recur or prevail in a text.To substantiate our observation,frequencies of certain language features should be computed. The problem of measuring style Bernard Bloch,who defined the style of a text as the message carried out by the frequency distributions and transitional probabilities of its linguistic features,especially as they differ from those of the same features in the language as a whole.
