FundamentalsofmonitoringCO2

Fundamentals of monitoring CO2 injected underground Global CCS Institute webinar: Additional QAs English version 1. You note that there is a diverse range of tools for monitoring on the surface, near- surface and sub-surface, and you’ve talked about some of them. Where can people find out what other tools are available? What are some good information resources you would recommend? The Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) issued a document reviewing CCS Best Practices Standards, which can be accessed through the following link. /publications/documents/ReviewingBestPracticesStandards_2013Rep ort.pdf Also, the US Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has a Monitoring, Verification, and Accounting (MVA) Focus Area. Its website includes useful information on the different tools used throughout the geologic system. Please refer to the following link. /technologies/carbon_seq/corerd/mva.html 2. You’ve used the Cranfield project as an example in your presentation to demonstrate the tools used. What is the ballpark cost of the MMV program at Cranfield? What does MMV cost as a percentage of the overall project? The total field project cost is US$93 million, with a DOE share of US$65 million. Out of the DOE share, the Bureau of Economic Geology received US$38 million for the design and implementation of the monitoring program. Please note that this is a research project, in which a very comprehensive suite of monitoring tools and technologies has been applied for the understanding of effectiveness and applicability. These kind of extensive programs are not expected in commercial applications, where monitoring needs to be optimised and fit for purpose. For detailed technical information on Cranfield, please refer to a section dedicated to the project in the recently
