Amangani (peaceful home) clings to the crest of East Gros Ventre Butte, some 7,000 feet (2,135 metres) above sea level, high above the town of Jackson, Wyoming. The 40-suite retreat is a year-round destination acting as a premier ski resort from December through March, and the ideal base for exploring the magnificent natural surroundings in the warmer months. With its floor-to-ceiling columns of Oklahoma sandstone, ceilings and walls in Pacific redwood and chairs of rattan and woven cowhide, Amangani embraces the spirit of the West. The Lounge, with its soaring redwood ceiling, two large wood-burning fireplaces and two-storey window wall, affords open views across to the Snake River Range and below to Spring Gulch. Located next to the Lounge, the Library is a comfortable, light-filled room (above right). A selection of books on Western and Native American culture, as well as the region’s flora and fauna, is available. CDs, DVDs and games may be borrowed by guests. The adjacent Takoda Room (left), furnished with a wood-burning fireplace, is available for meetings and special- occasion dining. Terrazzo tables, metal- sculpted elk art and a wood-burning fireplace, lend a distinctive ambience to The Grill, Amangani’s 65-seat dining room which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Zinc Bar is an ideal venue for casual refreshments throughout the day. Each suite includes a king-size platform bed, fireplace, window-side day bed, terrazzo dining table, woven cowhide chairs in faux wolf fabric and a pine-stump table. Walls are decorated with back-lit cedar planks. The large bathroom and dressing area features a deep-soaking tub, twin vanities and a shower room trimmed in slate.
