EXAMPLES AND CAUSE FOR DIFFERECES BETWEEN HIGH-CONTEXT AND LOW-CONTEXT CULTURE NO.1 CONNOTATION AND DENOTATION e.g. HIGH-CONTEXT: It was very hot outside. A and B were sitting under the big tree for a brief rest. A said to B:its so hot. B nodded and went with A to the grocery store for some water. LOW-CONTEXT: It was very hot outside. A and B were sitting under the big tree for a brief rest. A said to B:Im thirsty. Theres a grocery store. Lets get some water there. In the high-context culture countries, people tend to be connotative, considering more about others opinion、emotion or need according to not only the words but also the non-verbal code such as expressions、actions and environment, so they often think first before speak, while people in the countries of low-context culture tend to speak out their opinion directly because of their straight way of thinking. In the example of high-context culture, A just said that the weather was too hot, which connotating the sentence: Im thirsty and want to have some water, and you? But in the low-context culture, A can be much more straight. NO.2 DIFFERNCE IN REACTION e.g. HIGH-CONTEXT: A and B went into the grocery store. When they were choosing the drinks they want, a couple started to quarrel indoor, and the voice soon rised to the whole store. A and B were quite unpleasant, but they said nothing, paid their bills and hurried out. LOW-CONTEXT: A and B went into the grocery store.
