- 1 - AContrastive Analysis of Chinese and English Allusions and Their Deep Connotations* BY JEFF ZHANG① Abstract:Allusions , as a kind of very common and implied or indirect references , are succinct in form but profound in meaning . Proper uses of allusions in writing or speech not only make content richer but also make communication much more simple and valid . Such allusions , however , have uniquely national connotation , by which one will be puzzled if he or she is not acquainted with the cultural heritage of allusions bounded with different geographical environment,customs,religions,ways of thing ,etc. For that problem,this thesis goes to a contrastive study of Chinese allusions and English one and accordingly has summarized the general characters and differences in between . All above indicates that one culture is paired with ‘one’ cultural allusion.After this comparative analysis of English and Chinese allusions , audience would have a rough knowledge of connotations and imparity from them. Key Words: Chinese and English Allusions, Contrastive Analysis, Pragmatic Analysis, Cultural Connotations 【摘要】典故是一种常见的暗示或间接的表达方式,它文字简单,语义丰富。在 文章或演讲中恰当的运用典故不仅能使内容更加丰富生动,还使交流更加简洁有 效。但由于典故其丰富多彩的来源使它们具有强烈的名族色彩,集中反映了文化 民族在地理位置、风俗习惯、宗教信仰、思维方式等的不同,也就是说这些根植 于特有文化的典故容易对那些非同一文化的读者来产生理解的困惑以及语用的 错误。针对这种问题,本文通过对中英民族的典故进行比较分析,总结英汉典故 之间存在的共性和差异,从而来表现不同文化背景对典故的影响,折射出中英文 化的差异,以促进读者能够通过这篇文章对中英典故的内涵与差异有着一定的了 解。 【关键词】中英典故;比较分析;语用分析;文化内涵 1. Brief Introduction 1.1 Definition Different definitions of allusions have been made in Chinese dictionaries and English ones in early times. Allusions in 《辞海》 , the largest comprehensive dictionary in China, however , referred to “诗文中引用古书里的故事或语句”.And in 《现在汉语词典(2002 版)》 it is explained as “诗文里引用的古书中的故事或 词句 ” . Personally, it is very partial or one-sided of these illustrations for several points , two significant views of which are that allusion is not only quoted in poetic prose and source is longer limited in old times but also modern society.
