S+V: David cried. 2. S+V+SC: David looks tired. 3. S+V+DO: David loves his mother. 4. S+V+IO+DO: David gave me the book. 5. S+V+DO+OC: David makes his mother angry. Compounding and Modification 1. The woman stood. (simple subject +simple predicate) 2. The man and the woman stood and talked. (compound subject+ compound predicate) 3. The tall, beautiful woman stood under a tree reading a book. (complete subject+ complete predicate) Recognize the Sentences Neither John nor Mary attended the meeting. She turned and smiled and said good night to her father. The dog ran past the stranger and into the barn behind the house. The old man returning home after eight years absence found that all the neighbors he had known were no longer there.
