PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT4 Air Pollution and Motor Vehicles 1 Air pollution is increasingly becoming the focus of government and citizen concern around the globe. From Mexico City and New York, to Singapore and Tokyo, new solutions to this old problem are being proposed, trialled(试验) and implemented(实施) with ever increasing speed. It is feared that unless pollution reduction measures are able to keep pace with the continued pressures of urban growth, air quality in many of the world’s major cities will deteriorate(恶化) beyond reason. 2 Action is being taken along several fronts: through new legislation(立法), improved enforcement(执法) and innovative(创新的) technology. The aim is to remove the heaviest-polluting, most decrepit(破旧的) vehicles from the roads. 4 As part of a European Union environmental programme, a London council is testing an infra-red spectrometer(红外线分光仪) from the University of Denver in Colorado. It gauges(估量) the pollution from a passing vehicle—more useful than
