SUMMARY The California State Auditor’s report (Number 2001-109) recommended that the Board, “Update its database and require local governments to report accurate landfill capacity information on an annual basis in a consistent manner.” At the February 19, 2002 Board Meeting, the Board directed staff to look at data compiled by other Board programs as possible sources of remaining landfill capacity information and bring an update item back to the Board. II. PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION California’s Landfill Crisis – report prepared by Board staff circa 1985 Reaching the Limit, An Interim Report on Landfill Capacity in California, April 1992 Toward Ensuring Adequate Landfill Capacity, Prepared as Part of the Integrated Waste Management Planning Study, Contract Number C1089, May 1995, prepared by Environmental Science Associates Pryde Roberts Carr.; a survey to determine remaining landfill capacity and the methods used to determine landfill capacity. (see publication Number 210-07-009). LEA Advisory No. 45 (1997) – Methodology for Determining Remaining Landfill Capacity The California State Auditor’s report (Number 2001-109) was released on December 11, 2000.
