2 Proceeding down river
Key words and terms:
underway: The word underway means that a vessel is not at anchor, or make fast to the shore, or aground.
making way: ”Underway” is not the same as “making way”. “Making way” means the vessel is actually moving through the water either under her own power or with the help of tugs. Thus a vessel steaming at 12 knots is “underway” and “making way”. A vessel which is miles’ from land and stopped, but not at anchor, is “underway” but not “making way”. If a vessel is steaming at 5 knots against a 5 knot current, she is “underway” and “making way” because speed is measured relative to the water, and not to the land.
