INSTRUCTION SHEET FOR EXERCISE #4 :
FINDING AND ANALYZING RESERVATION CENSUS DATA
Native Geographies (Geography/American Indian Studies 322/522)
General Description
In this exercise you will be comparing census data of a particular reservation to the same data of the state that contains the reservation. You will need to analyze this data (highlight and write over the word Answer). Think creatively about the reality behind the data, and be specific rather than vague in your interpretations.
1. You will need to select the largest reservation (in population) of your selected tribal nation.
For example, Pine Ridge would be the largest reservation of the Lakota. (If you have a Canadian First Nation, select a U.S. reservation of a tribe that has not already been selected by another student.)
2. You will also identify the state that contains the reservation. If the reservation is in more than one state, select the state that contains a majority of the reservation land. (Navajo would be in Arizona.)
3. Using the U.S. Census website and a calculator, you will use a Location Quotient to compare reservation data to the state data. You do not need to hand in this Instruction Sheet. Staple your exercise together!
Getting your U.S. Census data
Step 1: Go to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American FactFinder website at HYPERLINK /servlet/BasicFactsServlet /servlet/BasicFactsServlet?_lang=en_classic= Bookmark this page.
Step 2: In the rectangular box that is titled “Basic Facts” where it says “Show Me,” click on the right arrow and scroll to Census 2000 Quick Tables. We will be using five tables in different parts of this exercise:
Economic Characteristics: Employment, Income, Poverty, and more
General Characteristics: Population and Housing
Housing Characteristics: Value, Rent, Owner Costs, and more
Housing Occupancy and Tenure
Social Characteristics: Education, Ancestry, Languages and More
