LIPPMAN EdD, APRN, FAAN SADIANN OZMENT, MPH, RN, CHES AUGUST 4, 2010 Nursing Student Perceptions of Caring for Veterans VA Nursing Academy (VANA): Established in July 2007 with four “pioneer” partnership sites. There are currently 16 sites. Goals of the Academy: 1. Expand faculty in the VA and the university 2. Increase VA recruitment and retention of new nurses current staff 3. Expand the stipend program for graduate students pre/post doctoral nurse fellowship program Goal yet to be achieved: 1. Provide financial assistance to nursing students through scholarships VA Connecticut Healthcare System Fairfield University Partnership Partnership Goals: Provide nursing opportunities for educational and practice innovations Focus on second-degree students who are most likely to remain in area after graduation Assign Mentors from VA nursing staff for all second degree nursing students Provide “Veteran-specific” monthly educational programs that support nursing curriculum Provide the majority of nursing clinical practicum at VA Why the Interest In This Study: To provide population specific, culturally based evidence about the potential for nursing students to improve their sense of efficacy in the care of Veterans To evaluate if partnership goal interventions produced an improvement in nursing student efficacy to care for Veterans To be aware of nursing student perceptions about providing care to Veterans of all ages  Theoretical Framework Supporting Inquiry Watson’s Theory of Transpersonal Caring Emphasis is on helping others to utilize advanced nursing healing methods to gain increased self knowledge, self control self healing Bandura’s Model of Self-Efficacy Promotes that the individual’s beliefs about their capabilities can influence current performance Coates’ Caring Efficacy Scale Describes the conviction in one’s ability to express a caring orientation and to develop caring relat
