J．Cent．South Univ．(2012)19：1773—1779 DoI：10．1007／sl1771—012．1206．z Effect of inclusion on high cycle fatigue response of a powder metallurgy tool steel 垒Springer YAO Jun(姚君) ，QU Xuan—hui(曲选辉) ，Raft-ud—din ，HE Xin-bo({N,~ JO ，ZHANG Lin(~林) ，。 1．State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials (University of Science and Technology Beijing)，Beijing 100083，China； 2．School of Materials Science and Engineering，University of Science and Technology Beijing，Beijing 1 00083，China ◎Central South University Press and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012 Abstract：The high cycle fatigue response of a high v．aloyed powder metallurgy tool steel(AISI l1)wich diferent inclusion sizes was studied．Two materials of this grade at a similar hardness of about HRC 60 were subjected to axial loading fatigue tests．tensile tests and fracture toughness measurements to investigate their mechanical properties．Large inclusion above 70 pan is indicated to be responsible for the tensile fracture which happens before yielding．The fatigue strength obtained uD to 10 cycles is found to decrease from approximately 1 538 MPa to 1000 MPa wim the inclusion size increasing above 30 gm．The intemaUy induced crack initiation is mainly atributed to the surface compressive residual stress of 300-450 MPa．Fractographic evaluation demonstrates that the crack initiation and propagation controling factors of the two materials are almost the same，indicating that the two factors would be insignificantly afected by the inclusion size 1eve1．Paris sizes of the tw o materials both show a tendency to decrease as the ratio of stress intensity factor of crack origin to factor of fish—eye increases．The investigation into the relationship betw een stress intensity factors and fatigue life of the tw o materials fia-ther indicates that the high cycle fatigue behavior of AIS1 11 is controled by crack propagation． Key words：powder metallurgy tool steel；high cycle fatigu e；fractography；fish—eye；inclusion 1 Introductio
