ADVANCES IN ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES,VOL.21,NO.3,2004,444—455 Global Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere General Circulation Models in LASG/IAP YU Yongqiang*(俞永强),ZHANG Xuehong(张学洪),and GUO Yufu(郭裕福) State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling 1or Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Institute o{Atmospheric Physics Chinese Academy o{Sciences Beijing 100029 (Received 6 March 2003;revised 24 November 2003) ABSTRACT Coupled ocean atmospheric general circulation models are the only tools to quantitatively simulate the climate system.Since the end of the 1980s,a group of scientists in the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geoplysical Fluid Dynamics(LASG),Institute of Atmospheric Physics(IAP),Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS),have been working to develop a global OGCM and a global coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model(CGCM).From the original flux anomaly— coupling model developed in the beginning of the 1990s to the latest directly—coupling model,LASG scientists have developed four global coupled GCM s.This study summarizes the development history of these models and describes the third and fourth coupled GCMs and selected applications.Strengths and weaknesses of these models axe highlighted. Key words:coupled GCM,climate change,OGCM 1.Introduction In order to simulate the variations on intra-seasonal Earth’s climate and its to decadal timescales,a hierarchy of comprehensive climate system models is needed. The most important components in such models are the atmosphere, the oceans, sea ice,and the land and its featares. The development of such models has been undergoing a step-by—step process: from stand alone atmosphere models to coupled ocean- atmosphere models, and later to multi-sphere inter. active models. The process is far from finished for climate modeling communities. The global coupled GCMs described in this study may represent an early stage toward the development of more complete cli. mate system models.D
