Unit 5 Nelson Mandela——a modern hero;趣味导读;Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918. He was the first black president of South Africa and he was one of the great moral and political leaders of our time. In 1944 Mandela helped found the African Congress Youth League (ANCYL), and he was elected chairman of ANCYL in 1948. From 1962 to 1990 (29 years), Mandela was put into prison because of opposing South Africas white minority government. In prison, Mandela never compromised his political principles and was always a source of strength for the other prisoners. He was first democratically elected State President of South Africa on 10 May 1994～June 1999. ;Mandela retired from public life in June 1999. He currently resides in his birthplace. I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. I was twelve years old. It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems.
