Computer Networks (COMP2322) Class Project Rocky K. C. Chang 15 March 2017 Objectives: After completing the project, you will learn ? How to configure a small-scale IP network with router and switch, and how to diagnose network issues using Wireshark, ping, and other tools. ? How to measure network performance of your ISP and to gain understanding of the Internet performance, and to analyze the routes and the ISPs’ performance and ? How to present your project work effectively in a demonstration session and in a report. There are two parts to this project. The first part is to deploy a Pi-based monitor at a residential home to gauge the performance of the ISP. The second part, which is in another document, is to set up a small IP network with router and switch. Part 1: Cooperative monitoring of ISPs’ performance in Hong Kong Each team will host a ready-made Pi-based network monitor at a residential home and let it measure Internet performance for about four weeks. The dataset (traceroutes and network path performance) obtained from all teams will be made available for data analysis on a weekly basis. Each team will analyze and visualize the data to obtain patterns about the network performance data and answer questions, such as - Is there any noticeable pattern in the network performance? - Which ISP seems to stand out in terms of performance? - Do you observe any serious performance degradation? - Any service differentiation for overseas routes? - How many router hops are involved in the path measurement? - How (dis)similar are the routes used by different ISPs?
