Big benefits of small talk ①Waiting for buses or in line at the store, we’ve all had those moments to pass the time or break the silence around us. We turn to our neighbors and say, “It’s good weather, isn’t it?” Why do we like to talk this way to strangers? Is it just that we’re so uncomfortable with quiet?;Though small talk does help to fill in those gaping silences, it achieves more than that, too. The Los Angeles Times printed an article “Researchers Take High View of Idle Chatter”. The article cited (引用) research from the University of Michigan stating that increased social contact, specifically conversation, improves mental function. When you think about it, keeping a conversation going is a challenge, like a puzzle. You have to search through a mental database to find one that will elicit (引出 ) a positive response from the other person, that will be in keeping with the flow of conversation, and that will open up the next part of the exchange. That’s harder than the crossword and it is good for your brain.;Several other studies show the advantages of socializing for lowering stress. Consider how much more quickly and easily your bus ride goes when you spend it in conversation with the woman next to you. We need to connect with others to be healthy, and when close friends and family members aren’t around, it’s great that we can rely on perfect strangers to give us the same social benefits.;Though Americans have a reputation for being more informal in approaching strangers than people from other cultures are, everyone engages in small talk on some level. ②That’s because it’s important for the exchange of information. When you’re traveling, approaching locals can get you information about a place that you wouldn’t be able to find in any guidebook. Usually, they’re more than happy to engage you in conversation, answer your questions, and offer their advice.;1.佳句仿写 ①他坐在扶手椅上读报纸。(v.-ing伴随状语) ________________________________________________ ②李明看起来不高兴,那是因为他没有通过昨天的数学考试
