I’ll never forget the sound of the artillery shells as we approached the beach in France. Next we had to jump into the water. It was cold, but fortunately not too deep. When we reached the beach I was terrified. ;The German soldiers were shooting at us and there were not many places to hide. I remember seeing many of my friends killed and wounded. ;I was with a group of about seven other soldiers from my company. The first thing we saw when we got off the beach was another company, so we joined that, and started the long fight to Paris. I remember trying to ride one of his little brothers’ bikes. It was small, and I kept falling off. I remember how Peter kept laughing at me. ;Gradually, I remember getting better—I could ride for a metre or two without stopping. I asked Peter if I could borrow the bike. He agreed, so I took it home. I remember practicing and practicing. And I’ll never forget the moment when I called my parents out of the house to watch me ride a bicycle for the first time.
