Skills building 1: listening for key words Read the guidelines in Skills building 1 on Page 10. Try to give a speech, following the guidelines. Step 1: recognizing key words 1. Listen to this speech, trying to fill the table in Part A on Page 10. 2. Listen to the tape again, and check the answers. 3. What role do you think friendship plays in our daily life? Now, let’s read a short story. After that, you may get a better understanding of friendship. 4. Read the story again and then complete the table with the key words in the short story. 5. Listen to the conversation in Part C and check your notes in Part B against what you hear in Part C. Skills building 2: asking for and giving opinions 1. Group work: Discussion: How to ask for and give opinions? 2. Pair work: Create a situation and make a dialogue, you’ll practice using the phrases you listed just now. 3. Read the guidelines on Page 12. Step 2: giving your opinion on a literary review 1. Read the literary review of “The Attic” on page 12. Focus on the plot, characters and the theme of the story. 2.
