Abstract
Background:NumerousstudieshaveshownthatEpstein-Barrvirus(EBV)andcytomegalovirus(CMV)caninfect
immunocompetentpatientssimultaneouslywithotheragents.Nonetheless,multipleinfectionswithotheragents
inEBV/CMV-infectedchildrenhavereceivedlittleattention.Weconductedaretrospectivestudyofchildrenwith
suspectedinfectiousmononucleosis.Peripheralbloodsampleswereanalyzedbyindirectimmunofluorescenceto
detectEBV,CMVandotherrespiratoryagentsincludingrespiratorysyncytialvirus;adenovirus;influenzavirustypes
AandB;parainfluenzavirustypes1,2and3;ChlamydiapneumoniaeandMycoplasmapneumoniae.Amedical
historywascollectedforeachchild.
Results:Theoccurrenceofmultipathogeninfectionswas68.9%,81.3%and63.6%inthechildrenwithprimaryEBV,
CMVorEBV/CMV,respectively,whichwassignificantlyhigherthanthatinthepast-infectedgrouporthe
uninfectedgroup(p0.001).Ofthemultipathogen-infectedpatients,theincidenceofC.pneumoniaeinchildren
withprimaryinfectionwasashighas50%,significantlyhigherthanintheothergroups(p0.001).Inthepatients
withmultipathogeninfectionandEBV/CMVprimaryinfection,fever,rash,lymphadenopathy,hepatomegaly,
splenomegaly,atypicallymphocytesandabnormalliverfunctionweremorefrequentandthelengthofhospital
stayanddurationoffeverwerelongerthaninotherpatients.
Conclusion:Ourstudysuggeststhatthereisahighincidenceofmultipathogeninfectionsinchildrenadmitted
withEBV/CMVprimaryinfectionandthatthedistributionofthesepathogensisnotrandom.
