STATISTICAL RELEASE BUSINESS POPULATION ESTIMATES FOR THE UK AND REGIONS 2013 Summary  There were an estimated 4.9 million private sector businesses in the UK at the start of 2013, an increase of 102,000 compared to the start of 2012.  This continues the trend of steady growth in the UK business population since the series began in 2000, with the 2013 estimate 23 October 2013 being the highest.
