Engineer Hamworthy KSE Svaneh?j A/S Fabriksparken 6, DK-9230 Svenstrup J, Denmark 1 Preface This paper focuses on safety issues thatgovern cargo pumping systems onboardchemical tankers. This topic is becomingmore and more relevant to ship owners,managers and other parties trying to keep upwith technological advances in electric pumpdesigns. The paper takes a look at the IEC standardsfor hazardous area definitions and how theycorrespond with the provisions given inIMO#39;s IGC amp; IBC codes chapter 10 forelectrical installations. Three major standardi-zation bodies - IEC, CENELEC and IMO -are interrelated in their actions and work onthis topic. On chemical tankers IMO does not yet permitthe submerged electrically driven cargopumps, whereas on gas tankers it is allowedfor electricity in the tank. The submergedpump technology has been available fromHamworthy KSE Svaneh?j A/S but was onlyauthorized for use in regional areas. Therefore today the electrical frequencyconverter driven deepwell cargo pumpingsystem is designed with the motor on the deckand the pump in the tank. From an intrinsic safety point of view it isonly necessary to pay attention to the deck-mounted motor and the pump placing in thetank compartment, as the frequency convertercontrols are placed in the IEC defined safearea. The motor is of a certified explosion-proof/flameproof type, tested and marked accordingto the CENELEC code. The transmission ofpower from the motor to the pump is viamechanical means. The IBC code requiresequipment exposed to cargo not to corrode,overheat nor spark. Therefore the pumps aremade out of stainless steel.
