Design:Cross-sectional,observational. Setting:Community,nursinghomesandrehabilitationoracutecarefacilitiesinfourItalianregions. Participants:Arandomsampleof526subjects,aged65yearsandolder(217freelivingindividuals,213residentsinnursing homes,and93patientsinrehabilitationandacutewards). Measurements: All subjects underwent a multidimensional geriatric evaluation of: nutritional status, anthropometric parameters,healthandcognitivestatus,depression,taste,chewingandswallowingfunction,andsomehormonesrelated toappetite.Dietvarietywasassessed,consideringthefrequencyofconsumptionofdifferentfoodgroups(milkanddairy products;meat,fish,andeggs;cerealsandderivatives;fruitandvegetables). Results:Inanorexicelderlysubjectstheglobalfoodintakewasreduced,andtheeatingpatternwascharacterizedbythe reducedconsumptionofcertainfoodgroups(‘‘meat,eggsandfish’’and‘‘fruitandvegetables’’)whereasthefrequencyof consumptionofmilkandcerealsremainedalmostunchanged.Nutritionalparametersweresignificantlybetterinnormal eatingsubjectsandcorrelatedwithdietvariety. Conclusion:Becauseofthehighprevalenceofsenileanorexiainthegeriatricpopulationanditsimpactonthenutritional status,tocolallowingtheearlydiagnosisofanorexia ofaging,aimedatidentifyingitscausesandatoptimizingtreatmentofanorexicpatients.
