Take Beijing for example, the travel distance by bus is 4.5 kms shorter than car, but the time using is 24.3 minutes longer. In both urban and rural areas, the cost of different modes of transit (seen in the first column) are weighed as a percentage of disposable income (seen in the 2nd and 3rd columns). Urban residents spend 5, 5,8-17,9-23 and 29-78% of their disposable income on bus, BRT, rail transit, car and taxi respectively. Rural residents spend 14,14,28-56,29-77,97-258% of their disposable income on bus, BRT, rail transit, car and taxi respectively. The international average percentage of disposable income spent on commuter expenses is approximately 8%. For urban residents using Bus, BRT, and Rail transit, average consumer expenditures of disposable income are reasonably within this 8% standard. However, for rural residents, all modes of transportation are in excess of the 8% international standard. Thus, we believe that the key factors involved in choosing modes of transportation are: speed, cost, comfort and punctuality.
