Objective.Toinvestigatethepreferencesofpsychiatricpatientsregardingattendancefortheircontinuingmentalhealthcareonce stablefromaprimarycaresettingasopposedtoaspecializedpsychiatricservicesetting.Methods.150consecutivepsychiatric patientsattendingoutpatientreviewinacommunitymentalhealthcentreinDublinwereapproachedandaskedtocompletea semistructuredquestionnairedesignedtoassesstheobjectivesofthestudy.Results.145patientscompletedthequestionnairegiving aresponserateof97%.Ninety-eightpatients(68%)preferredattendingaspecializedpsychiatryserviceevenwhenstabilisedon theirtreatment.Thecommonreasongivenbypatientsinthiscategorywasfearofsubstandardqualityofpsychiatriccarefrom theirgeneralpractitioners(GPs)(67patients,68.4%).Twenty-ninepatients(20%)preferredtoattendtheirGPforcontinuing mentalhealthcare.Thereasonsgivenbythesepatientsincludedcon?denceinGPs,providingsamelevelofcareaspsychiatrist formentalillness(18patientsor62%),andtheadvantageofmanagingbothmentalandphysicalhealthbyGPs(13patients, 45%).Conclusion.Mostpatientswhoattendspecialisedpsychiatricservicespreferredtocontinueattendingspecializedpsychiatric serviceseveniftheybecomementallystablethanprimarycare,withmostreasonsrevolvingaroundfearsofina
