This allows organizations to choose which applications are used in their business environment. At launch the application categories will include Voice over IP internet telephony applications, Instant Messaging and P2P file-sharing software. Control for other categories of applications, including games and distributed computing projects, will be added in future releases. Controlled application identities will typically detect a particular application rather than a specific version. In some cases, the identity might refer group of applications, for example, games published by a named publisher. Detection is regularly updated alongside malware updates. Desktop management solutions are already available to help IT administrators to manage software applications, but they require additional investment and for many enterprises can be expensive, unwieldy and time consuming to maintain. In response to customer demand, Sophos have now integrated an application control facility into Sophos Anti Virus, the industry-leading security solution for endpoints. This means that Sophos Anti Virus customers will now also have the ability to block such applications through their existing anti-virus detection and management infrastructure. IT administrators, for whom IT security and anti-virus are a ‘must have’, can therefore now get extra benefits from this investment.
