Ridicule, Irony and Sarcasm Sarcasm is speech or writing which actually means the opposite of what it seems to say and usually intends to mock or insult someone. If you ridicule someone or ridicule their ideas or beliefs, you make fun of them in an unkind way. Irony is a subtle form of humour which involves saying things that you do not mean. Sarcasm(尖酸刻薄，讽刺/挖苦/斥责，意在伤害对方，较强贬义。) e.g.1. You are the most ugly woman in the world. 2. I cannot believe such a disgusting person like him could own a marriage. 3. He is very generous indeed. (Referring to one who won’t lend the speaker his dictionary) 4. He declared “ The Christian believes that man came from above. The evolutionist believes that he must have come from below.” Ridicule(奚落，直截了当地表现出轻蔑之义； 揭示某人或某事可笑的外表或狼狈的处境或愚蠢的行为，产生贬低、嘲弄、丑化的效果； 讽刺修辞格中最强烈、尖锐，火药味浓) e.g. The girl is showing her bold head and plump stomach. The child is loosening her old joints. Bryan mopped his bald dome in silence. Irony(反语，与事实相反, 分为 verbal irony/situational irony/) e.g. you don’t know how exited I am right now. (but actually I am falling asleep) She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. (but actually she is unbelievably ugly)
