It is pointed out in the paper throu h analy sis that if the rock failure is studied from the viewpoint of ener y, its phy sicalm echanism m ay be discovered. Follow in this train of thou h,t the authors consider that the initial de- form ation period of rock is characterized by ener y d issipation, wh ich can be studied by dissipative structure theory. When the stress is over its peak value poin,t the rock w ill be sudden ly destroyed and release a lar e am oun t of ener y, a p rocess that can be analyzed usin the catastrophe theory.
