AMulticriteriaDecisionMakingApproachforEstimating theNumberofClustersinaDataSet YiPeng1,YongZhang1,GangKou1*,YongShi2,3 1School of Management and Economics, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, Sichuan, China, 2CAS Research Center on Fictitious EconomyandDataSciences,Beijing,China,3CollegeofInformationScienceTechnology,UniversityofNebraskaatOmaha,Omaha,Nebraska,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Determiningthenumberofclustersinadatasetisanessentialyetdifficultstepinclusteranalysis.Sincethistaskinvolves morethanonecriterion,itcanbemodeledasamultiplecriteriadecisionmaking(MCDM)problem.Thispaperproposesa multiplecriteriadecisionmaking(MCDM)-basedapproachtoestimatethenumberofclustersforagivendataset.Inthis approach, MCDM methods consider different numbers of clusters as alternatives and the outputs of any clustering algorithmonvaliditymeasuresascriteria.TheproposedmethodisexaminedbyanexperimentalstudyusingthreeMCDM methods, the well-known clustering algorithm–k-means, ten relative measures, and fifteen public-domain UCI machine learningdatasets.TheresultsshowthatMCDMmethodsworkfairlywellinestimatingthenumberofclustersinthedata andoutperformthetenrelativemeasuresconsideredinthestudy.
