Cobalt and zinc but not copper or iron also activated the methane production rate. Methanogeniccarbonicanhydraseandacetatekinaseweredirectlyactivatedbycadmium.Indeed,cellsculturedin100 mM totalcadmiumremoved41–69%oftheheavymetalfromthecultureandaccumulated231–539nmolCd/mgcellprotein. 2+ Thisisthefirstreportshowingthat(i)Cd hasanactivatingeffectonmethanogenesis,abiotechnologicalrelevantprocess inthebio-fuelsfield;and(ii)amethanogenicarchaeaisabletoremoveaheavymetalfromaquaticenvironments.
